This week we've got Dorset Premieres of two inspiring and moving short films about Climate Anxiety and Climate Action:

Climate Anxiety  (17 mins) 2024

The majority of young people are worried about climate change and fearful for their future. In this short film young people, parents and professionals discuss their experience of climate anxiety and describe activities and sources of support that they find helpful.

The film was made by Cambridge Moviemakers and directed by John Yates.

Plan Z: From Lab Coats to Handcuffs (23 mins) 2025

When the UK government ignores mounting evidence for climate breakdown, a group of scientists turn to civil disobedience to warn the public themselves, risking arrest, a criminal record and their professional reputations.

A window into the world of reluctant activism, Plan Z explores the power of protest when established routes of influence fail.

"It possibly looks extreme or crazy or a bit mad. For me, this is a plan Z, everything else has been tried."

Director Statement

“They're just unemployed, they're just hippies. Don't listen to them: they're not like you. We hear the same lines trotted out all the time.” – Dr Charlie Gardner, conservationist

Taking part in civil disobedience invites a cacophony of stereotypical labels from politicians, media outlets and passers-by. But how would people react if they knew that scientists – often regarded as calm, aloof and research-obsessive – were becoming so alarmed about global heating that they’d begun to step out from behind their academic journals, raise their voices and lock themselves to stuff?

Over three years documenting the climate protest in the UK, our cameras have continually been drawn to earth scientists, social scientists, ecologists, chemists, and more. They’ve become the acid test of credibility for direct action movements. However, theirs is also a deeply personal quest calling into question the very ethics of their profession. As scientists’ research, then their public influence, has failed to gain traction, their growing presence on the streets is now a last-resort act to communicate the urgency of climate breakdown to the public – it’s their Plan Z.

“We might be considered radical people, but we’re not asking for anything radical.”
– Dr Abi Perrin, microbiologist

When stripped of activist logos, slogans and top-line messaging, we believe that our characters’ motivations will chime with the moral compasses of most audience members, regardless of political persuasion. We hope also to provoke viewers to question, “How bad would things have to be for me to break the law?” and “How would I feel if my right to protest were taken away?”. New laws passed by UK Parliament in 2023 have increased police powers to break up so-called ‘disruptive’ protest and the severity of sentencing available to those found guilty of a crime. But are protestors the real enemy? Plan Z challenges us to question who has the public’s best interests at heart.

We'll also have:

Delicious (mostly) organic vegan curries from Fergus Bradbeer aka Vegie Vortex (who also used to do the curries at Beach and Barnicott), plus hot and cold drinks.

Please note:

Our room hire costs £42/ week so if you're able to able to contribute more than the default ticket amount then please do so.

We also need to ensure enough people come along to make it worthwhile for Fergus to keep coming along to cook up the delicious food - so invite a friend!

Many thanks in advance. Together We Have Everything.
