About
HacknBreak is more than an event; it's a dynamic movement embodying collaborative innovation at its core.
Inspired by the ethos of open science, open source, free software, and hacking culture since August 2016, HacknBreak Open Innovation Camp has transformed into a vibrant 9-day, 9-night gathering at the nexus of science, technology, and design.
With the collective efforts of thousands from diverse fields, competence levels, and regions, HacknBreak has evolved into a civic, egalitarian, and equalizing force—a movement driven by the evolving needs of our communities.
This initiative fosters collaboration among participants from varied disciplines, cultivating a culture of cooperation and collective work. Participants go beyond their individual fields, collaboratively designing and executing various aspects of the event, ensuring inclusivity and reflecting diverse expertise.
In essence, HacknBreak is a unique and liberating solidarity event that transcends traditional boundaries.
Sustaining HacknBreak, a Mediterranean event with limited conditions, means, time, and budgets, we rely on micro sponsorships, tiny donations, and the collective power of minds and physical labor.
Over this 9-year adventure, we've hosted 10,000+ participants, engaged 1000+ experts, mentors, and trainers, organized 1000+ sub-events, trainings, workshops, and conducted 30+ hackathons, ideathons, makeathons, and gamejams.
Free software communities, student groups, civil society organizations, and various ecosystem components in our region have not only strengthened their communities but also formed new connections.
Despite facing challenges such as the pandemic and earthquakes, HacknBreak has demonstrated resilience. In 2024, the camp will be reorganized, expanding community support and continuing transformative gatherings at OpenCampus.
Starting in 2024, HacknBreak aims to reach a wider international audience, enhancing support for collaboration and hosting events at distributed OpenCampus initiatives.
