About

Dear Friends,

·         Would you like to be part of co-creating a supportive community?
·         Are you interested in a space where you can contribute and feel heard?
·         Are you fed up with feeling the pressure to try and get ahead everywhere you go?
·         Are you inspired to share your skills and learn from others at the grass roots level?

We have come together to be a response to what is going on in the external world (the climate crisis, the cost-of-living crisis, and the chaotic political decision making to name just a few) to explore a new way of being together in community. To focus and organise our efforts into something that we can tangibly do in service to the future of life on Earth, in a healthy and innovative way.

The origin of this way of community building comes from the late Terry Patten (https://www.terrypatten.com/) and ideas in his book “A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries.” During the course of his life, he built an inspiring global online community of, in his words, “sacred activists, creative agents and social entrepreneurs.”

A meaningful amount of research and experience has gone into this particular way of joining communities together. A book "Being the Change: Discoveries from a Yearlong Living Laboratory: Action-Research Findings from a Global Social Experiment" by Terry Patten was written in June 2020 to summarise the lessons learnt, and there have been many developments since this publication.

Terry’s heart-based way of working led us to the formation and early beginnings of St Albans Heart last year. The difference being that instead of being global and online, this group will be local and in person. At least to begin with, many of the resources that we will be using come from the experience of The New Republic of the Heart community.

We have put together a framework to get the ball rolling. Our hope is that, as people join, the group will evolve its own systems, resources and ways of working collaboratively that suit us.

Here are some of the things we have come to so far:

·         This is a social experiment; everyone is part of the journey and so part of the outcome.

·         We will balance inner, interpersonal and outer work; - Inner work (self-exploration, self-understanding, healing, spiritual transformation; what we do to change our behaviours) - Interpersonal work (interaction with others; empathy, active listening, emotional intelligence, co-leadership and collective decision making) - Outer work (things outside of us that we want to change, a project you want to do, or support, that’s suited to your skill).

·         There will be a monthly Saturday afternoon community session (3 hours), but also dyads (pair work) and pods (small group work) which can be done online or live. We strongly encourage participation in this session.

·         The minimum time commitment is 4 hours per month. The more you put in, the more you get out.

·         Other projects/sessions/meet ups will emerge out of the community, dyad and pod sessions. There may be projects we want to get together on, or a skill we want to learn that somebody could teach.

·         Partners are most welcome. Soon children will also be encouraged to join in when we have co-designed how to manage that.

·         St Albans Heart is open to anyone in Hertfordshire and/or can come to the monthly meetings in person.

There will be a monthly membership fee or £10 to support the community which will be run at cost, not for profit, and be transparent.
