The Blackhouse Project

Fiscal Host: Gift Collective

The Blackhouse Project: weekly radio & podcast on 106.1FM celebrating African NZ voices — young and old. Stories other Kiwis hear little about, from thinkers and activists to artists and writers, tautoko-ing organisations that uplift our community.

About

The Blackhouse Project
The Blackhouse Project is a vibrant and inclusive community space, home to a weekly on-air radio show and podcast via Access Radio Wellington, celebrating the Global African Heritage diaspora in Aotearoa — young and old, in all the ways we show up. Based in Wellington and a finalist in the Aotearoa Radio & Podcast Awards 2024 for Best Access Radio Show, The Blackhouse Project stands as a testament to unity, empowerment, and the philosophy of ubuntu combined with manaakitanga unique to this whenua, this country, and this experience of Aotearoa — creating a welcoming space for individuals of African heritage and the wider Global African, Caribbean, and Afro-Latinx communities.
As a hub of creativity and connection, The Blackhouse Project is where our communities and allies share stories, projects, art, music, and lived experiences — thinkers, activists, agitators, artists, musicians, storytellers, and writers alike. We foster a supportive, uplifting environment that champions growth and resilience, telling the stories, perspectives, and experiences other New Zealanders hear little about — through music performances, artist showcases, thought-provoking discussions, and community-driven initiatives.
We proudly welcome LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse, and physically diverse members of our communities — recognising that many of us know first-hand what it means to navigate this world from the margins, even within already marginalised spaces. At The Blackhouse Project, we listen, we don't judge. We laugh out loud, often and regularly. Only tautoko, solidarity, and respect — and the understanding that our shared experiences make us stronger together.
Tune in to our interviews, community discussions, music, storytimes, history, and more — and when we can bring guests into the conversation, it's the conversations that matter to us. Visitors and collaborators experience a warm, inclusive atmosphere that celebrates resilience, strengthens all cultural pride, and builds meaningful connections — ensuring that our Aotearoa diaspora voices, often unheard or overlooked, are amplified across and throughout Aotearoa.
The Blackhouse Project, 106.1FM Wellington Access Radio, is now syndicated to:
