The Blackhouse is a vibrant and inclusive community space that hosts a weekly on-air radio show and podcast via Access Radio Wellington, celebrating the Global African Heritage diaspora in New Zealand. Based in Wellington, and a finalist in the New Zealand Radio & Podcasting Awards 2024, for best Access Radio Show.
The Blackhouse seeks to symbolize unity and empowerment, practicing ubuntu as a way of life, offering a welcoming environment for individuals of African & the wider Global African Diaspora in Wellington, NZ.
As a hub of creativity and connection, The Blackhouse provides a space for the Global African diaspora community & allies to share stories, art, music, & experiences. It fosters a supportive community that encourages growth & upliftment.
Highlighting the talents & achievements of people belonging to the diaspora in Aotearoa, The Blackhouse showcases young artists, music performances, thought-provoking discussions, & community-driven initiatives. It is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by the Global African diaspora in Aotearoa because, & promoting positive change through awareness & collaboration with like-minded people & organizations.
Visitors to The Blackhouse experience a warm, inviting atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging, celebrates resilience, & builds new connections.
In its support for ACA Africa Connection Aotearoa and the kiSwahili Language Workshop, the Blackhouse represents creativity, & solidarity, standing in lockstep with aspirations of diaspora voices that are rarely heard or acknowledged, in Wellington & across New Zealand.
