May Update from OSC
Published on May 31, 2024 by Grace Powers

Hey all!

May is wrapping up, so it's time for the monthly OSC update! I'm sending this a few days early this month because there are a couple of time-sensitive items, including a Contributor Covenant survey and a funding opportunity. Keep reading to get all the details!

📣 Announcements

We’ve paid over $3 million to maintainers in March, April and May!
Over the past three months, we’ve consistently paid over a million dollars to open source maintainers each month! This is both a significant milestone and one of our long-term strategic goals. We’re very happy to see our member projects using their funds to support their work and we’ll be doing more to help our projects use their funds to support themselves and one another.

Berlin (or Vienna) Meetup!
Are you in or around Berlin or attending the Open Source Summit in Vienna? OSC is considering hosting a happy hour or meetup and we’re gauging interest. If you’re in or around those cities, let us know if you’re interested by filling out the Berlin/Vienna OSC Meetup Interest Survey

OSC holding account
Every donation made on the Open Collective platform generates a contribution number. If we receive a bank deposit without a corresponding number and cannot match the bank account name to a donor's profile on the platform, we move the funds into a 'holding' account. Funds will remain in this account until we locate the donor and confirm their banking details. Then, we will send the funds to the intended collective.

If you think you might have funds you were supposed to receive but did not, here's more information on what donors should do: Holding Unknown Funds

Payment processing fees related to bank transfers are increasing
Wise, the third-party payment processor we use for bank payments, is increasing its transfer fees to some countries. These fees are deducted from the collective balance directly with each transfer. If you have questions about how this might affect your collective balance, you can see from previous 'paid' expenses that the deducted fee is listed as the 'Payment Processor Fee'.

You can learn more about their fee increase here, and feel free to contact us with any questions. In general, we have found that bank transfers through Wise have the lowest payment processor fees compared to other payment options like PayPal.

Collective cleanup
Over the next few weeks, we will contact member projects that may not be in compliance with our hosting terms and eligibility requirements. This process will ensure compliance with our mission statement and pave the way for streamlined operations and collective growth.

We will send emails to the collectives' admins, so please ensure your address is current on the Open Collective platform. If you receive an email from us, it will contain the questions we need from you and a timeframe for a reply. If you do not hear from us, there is nothing you need to do.

✨ Community Highlights, Updates, and Announcements

GSOC accepted projects hosted by OSC
Exciting news! 2024 Google Summer of Code (GSoC) has kicked off, marking its 20th year. This year, several of our hosted projects are participating. Among the projects involved are Ankidroid, AsyncAPI, Electron, Mautic, stdlib, Unikraft, Wagtail, and Webpack

Congratulations to these projects!

Do you Use Contributor Covenant? The Organization for Ethical Source wants to hear from you.
The Organization for Ethical Source is conducting a survey of Contributor Covenant adopters. See their message below:

The Organization for Ethical Source is conducting a survey of Contributor Covenant adopters as we prepare to mark the 10th anniversary of this critical document with a new major version. Some changes we are considering are to make the Contributor Covenant more transferable to in person events, to offer translations in more languages, and to make enforcement of the code of conduct a bit easier to adopt. We want to hear from you about what you’d want to see from version 3 of the Contributor Covenant.
If your community or project uses Contributor Covenant, please take out time to fill out the survey. It should only take 10 minutes to fill out, there are 5 pages in the survey and they are all optional. We require your email address to help us track who is filling it out, but there is also a place where you can indicate that you’d like us to reach out to you for more feedback.

💰 Funding Opportunities

Digital Infrastructure Insights Fund
The 2024 Digital Infrastructure Insights Fund is accepting applications until June 2. Individuals and groups outside the United States are especially encouraged to apply. Learn more about the fund and the types of projects they’re funding here.
